Dev Weekend 2009

Day 1

Day 2

Cool things

  • Jesse (pianohacker) is working on a neat way to make system preferences translatable
  • Brainstorming on Koha architecture

Brainstorming Ideas

  • MARC record concept - what if MARC never existed? How would would structure our data. Thomas talked about the idea of storing all data in a normalised fashion, not MARCXML, stored in one way for indexing, one for display. Discussed looking into Tumer's approach. Historic reasons will make a move from MARC very very hard.
  • FRBR quick talk on this.
  • Performance and structure, idea to mix mod_perl and cgi as a small step forward. But it will mean probably doing the same amount of work. Need to check every is mod_perl safe
  • AJAX for circulation
  • Web services
  • Additional Daemons, circulation is a good step
  • MVC
  • dis-integration
  • Caching - queries, data structure, html caching, nginx/lighthttpd
  • Profiling NYT::Prof
  • Fast_CGI
  • mod_perl perlrun
  • expires headers / browser caching
  • Splitting static and dynamic content to different servers
  • Still need a new QA manager

Architecture

  • ORM - DBI::Class topic branch
  • Caching - Topic branch
  • OO Framework - Discussion
  • data model - No clear winner yet
  • testing & QA - need to talk about this on the mailing list
  • SOA/REST/MVC/Patterns - no clear winner yet here, need more prototypes
  • Multiple metadata formats
